Buying Recovery Support for a Parent After a Heart Attack or Stroke: A Guide for Adult Children
When a parent has a heart attack, heart surgery or a stroke, it's often a son or daughter who ends up researching late at night: reading about medicines, rehab, warning signs and "what else can we do?" That instinct to help is a gift. The way you help matters just as much.
Here is the short answer. Adult children often lead the search for recovery support after a parent's heart attack, surgery or stroke. The best approach starts with your parent: involve them in the decision, gather their full medication list, check with their care team or pharmacist, and choose support that fits their life. With Healos™, your parent shares their health details and consents, and a pharmacist reviews the kit against their medicines before it ships.
You're not alone, and the first year matters
In 2018, about one in four Canadians aged 15 and older, some 7.8 million people, provided care to a family member or friend with a long-term health condition (Statistics Canada, 2020). Many are adult children juggling work, their own families and a parent's recovery, sometimes from another city.
Their worry is well founded. About 18% of heart attack survivors have another major event within the first year (Jernberg et al., European Heart Journal, 2015), and about one in four stroke patients stops at least one prevention medicine within three months (Bushnell et al., Archives of Neurology, 2010). The months after discharge are where family support can make the most difference.
Start with your parent, not the checkout
Ask before you buy. "I've been reading about ways to support your recovery. Would you like to look at it together?" works better than a surprise package.
Respect their choices. Your parent decides what goes into their body. Pressure tends to backfire; involvement builds commitment.
Gather the full medication list, including over-the-counter products and supplements already in the cupboard.
Check with their care team or pharmacist, especially about blood thinners, kidney function and fluid limits (see the medication-nutrient map).
Protect their privacy. Health information belongs to your parent; anything shared should be with their consent.
Practical ways to help, near or far
Join appointments in person or by phone, with your parent's permission, and bring a list of questions.
Set up the basics: a weekly pill organiser, a home blood pressure monitor, a simple log on the fridge (see 5 numbers to track).
Encourage rehab and daily movement rather than doing everything for them (see home after a stroke).
Watch for warning signs and mood changes, and make sure everyone knows to call 911 for chest pain, stroke signs or fainting.
From a distance: a regular call at the same time each week, shared calendars and one local contact who can check in.
Look after yourself. Caregiver strain is common; share the load with siblings and ask about local caregiver support.
If you're considering Healos™ for a parent
Your parent completes the health details: diagnosis, medication list and anything important such as a blood thinner or fluid limit, and consents to the plan. You can help them fill it in and pay for it.
A pharmacist reviews the kit against their medicines before it ships.
Choose the right plan: the 91-Day Protocol for the first months after an event (see the 91-Day Protocol, week by week), or a Single Month with no renewal if they'd like to try first.
Follow-ups at days 30 and 60 and a blood-test report review at day 90 produce a summary your parent can share with their doctor, and with you if they choose.
It never replaces their medicines, rehab or specialists (see what Healos™ does, and doesn't do).
The bottom line
The most helpful thing an adult child can do is support a parent's recovery with them, not around them: involve them, gather the medication list, check with their care team, help with the practical basics and look after yourself too. If you choose additional support such as Healos, let your parent own the decision and the health details, and let a pharmacist check everything against their medicines.
