THE STRUCTURAL CRISIS - THE NUMBERS

The Waiting List Won't Shorten
Until Your Current Residents Get Better.

These are the structural conditions driving the LTC capacity crisis. Healos™ is designed specifically for this gap

— not as wellness, but as a measurable cellular health intervention for your highest-risk residents.

87.9%

· US assisted living occupancy 2026 — revenue lost in the empty 12.1%

22 months

Average resident length of stay — shortened by unmanaged decline

Annual staff turnover rate — driven by reactive, high-intensity care burden

Median private-pay monthly fee — at risk when families move loved ones out

The mechanism: When AL and memory care residents have unaddressed drug-nutrient depletions, subclinical inflammation, and mitochondrial energy deficits — they decline faster, generate more acute care transfers, require more intensive staff intervention per shift, and leave sooner. Each of these outcomes directly reduces your revenue, increases your operational cost, and shortens the tenure of the residents your team worked hard to admit.

Healos™ addresses all four mechanisms simultaneously — in a structured, pharmacist-reviewed, monthly-tracked program.

The dread before every cardiology appointment is real. Here's how to carry it:	Why appointment and scan anxiety is common in congenital heart disease, and practical ways to cope before, during and after.

Appointment Anxiety With Congenital Heart Disease | Healos™

  • The Weight of Lifelong Check-Ups: Coping With Appointment Anxiety in Congenital Heart Disease

For most people, a heart check-up is a one-off. For adults with congenital heart disease, there's always another one: the yearly clinic visit, the echo, the MRI, the Holter monitor, the result that takes a week to arrive. Many describe a familiar pattern: fine for months, then a knot in the stomach as the date approaches.

Here is the short answer. For adults with congenital heart disease, check-ups never really end, and many feel dread in the days before an appointment, scan or result. That's common: about half of adults with congenital heart disease meet criteria for a mood or anxiety disorder at some point, and anxiety is one reason people drift out of care. Preparing questions, bringing support and asking your ACHD clinic for psychological help make the load lighter.

Long-term stress also feeds the inflammation that congenital hearts share with heart attack survivors (see one inflammation, three hearts), so looking after your mind is part of looking after your heart.

Why lifelong check-ups weigh so heavily

  • A history that lives in the body. Many adults had surgery, hospital stays and frightening procedures as children; clinic smells and sounds can bring those memories back (see congenital heart disease anxiety and medical trauma).

  • Uncertainty that never fully resolves. Each appointment can bring news about a valve, a conduit, a rhythm or another procedure.

  • Waiting. The days between a scan and a result are often worse than the scan itself.

  • Big life decisions tied to results: work, pregnancy, travel, insurance.

It shows in the numbers. In a Canadian study, about half of adults with congenital heart disease met criteria for a mood or anxiety disorder in their lifetime (Kovacs et al., International Journal of Cardiology, 2009), and in a study of 134 adults at a US adult congenital heart clinic, 21% reported elevated post-traumatic stress symptoms overall and 11% had elevated symptoms specifically related to their heart disease or its treatment, several times the 3.5% rate in the general population (Deng et al., American Journal of Cardiology, 2016).

When anxiety turns into avoidance

The most natural way to escape appointment dread is to stop going, especially when you feel fine. That's one reason so many adults drift out of care: about 42% of people with congenital heart disease had a gap in cardiology follow-up of more than three years (Gurvitz et al., JACC, 2013; see the ACHD transition gap).

The trouble is that many problems in repaired hearts, such as a leaking valve, a narrowing conduit or a rhythm change, develop quietly and are easiest to treat when found early. Feeling well isn't the same as being well checked. If you've missed appointments, the best step is simply to call your ACHD clinic and rebook; teams see this often and won't judge you.

Practical ways to cope: before, during and after

Before:

  • Write down your questions and symptoms; anxiety makes memory unreliable.

  • Plan something calming the night before, and keep the day's schedule light.

  • Bring a support person, or ask to have them on speaker.

During:

  • Tell the team you feel anxious; they can explain each step or slow down.

  • Use slow breathing during scans: in for four, out for six.

  • Ask when and how results will arrive, and what happens if something needs follow-up.

After, while waiting:

  • Set a time limit for searching online, and use trusted sources.

  • Keep normal routines: movement, sleep, time with people.

  • If the waiting is unbearable, call the clinic and ask when to expect results.

Getting real support

Current ACHD guidelines recommend that psychosocial screening be part of routine care (Stout et al., Circulation, 2019), and many ACHD centres have psychologists or social workers who understand exactly this experience. Ask for a referral. Cognitive behavioural therapy helps with anticipatory anxiety, and peer support from other adults with congenital heart disease can make the experience feel far less lonely.

If anxiety is constant, affects sleep or work, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, reach out: call or text 988 in Canada or the US.

ACHD special considerations

Anxiety can feel like heart symptoms, and heart symptoms can feel like anxiety; never assume palpitations, breathlessness or chest pain are "just nerves". Agree a written symptom plan with your ACHD team. Some anxiety and sleep medicines interact with heart medicines or affect rhythm, and many adults take anticoagulants or have a fluid limit, so check any new medicine or supplement with your team. Endocarditis, rhythm and cyanosis considerations still apply. Your ACHD team's guidance overrides any general advice, including ours.

How Healos™ supports adults with congenital heart disease

In the Healos™ framework, mind-body-spirit state is a multiplier on everything else. Between ACHD visits, the 91-Day Protocol moves through Detox, Replenish and Repair, with complementary nutrition pharmacist-reviewed against your medication list, follow-ups at day 30 and day 60 (with a reminder to book your blood test) and a blood-test report review at day 90 that track mood and sleep alongside your numbers. Sovereign Monthly · Protect continues month to month. Healos™ doesn't provide psychological therapy and never replaces your ACHD team.

The bottom line

Dreading lifelong check-ups is common and understandable, not a weakness. Left alone, it can push people out of care at exactly the wrong time. Prepare, bring support, breathe through the scans, put limits on the waiting and ask your ACHD clinic for psychological help. Keeping the appointments, even anxious ones, is one of the most protective things you can do for a repaired heart.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I feel anxious before my cardiology appointments? Lifelong follow-up brings repeated uncertainty, and many adults with congenital heart disease carry memories of childhood surgery and hospital stays. About half meet criteria for a mood or anxiety disorder at some point.

Should I skip appointments if I feel fine? No. Many problems in repaired hearts develop quietly and are easiest to treat early. If you've missed appointments, call your ACHD clinic and rebook.

How can I cope with waiting for test results? Ask when and how results will arrive, limit online searching, keep normal routines, use slow breathing and lean on a support person. If the wait is unbearable, call the clinic.

Can my ACHD clinic help with anxiety? Often, yes. Guidelines recommend psychosocial screening as part of ACHD care, and many centres have psychologists or social workers. Ask for a referral.
