  • Inside an H-Index™ Report: A Sample Walkthrough

If you've been reading about recovery for a while, you've probably seen the H-Index mentioned at the bottom of an article and wondered what you'd actually get. A score? A diagnosis? A sales pitch?

It's none of those, and the easiest way to explain it is to open one up.

Here is the short answer. An H-Index report summarises a structured 32-dimension audit across 11 lifestyle and health categories into one overall score, a category-by-category picture and a short list of action areas. It's a pre-visit communication tool, not a diagnostic test: its job is to help you and your specialist spend a short appointment on what matters most, and to show which kind of support fits you.

Below is a walkthrough of an illustrative report for a composite reader we'll call Mark, 61, four months after a heart attack and two stents. Mark isn't a real patient; his numbers are a realistic example of what a report looks like.

Why a pre-visit summary matters more than you'd think

Cardiology and neurology appointments are short, and a lot happens in them. Research suggests patients forget an estimated 40–80% of medical information almost immediately after a visit (Kessels, Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, 2003). The reverse is also true: the things you meant to mention, such as poor sleep, a muscle ache you blamed on your statin, or a low mood that's lasted weeks, often never come up.

Two simple tools help. Writing questions down in advance, sometimes called a question prompt list, increases the number of questions patients actually ask (Brandes et al., Psycho-Oncology, 2015). And a short, structured summary of how you've been doing gives the specialist context they can't get from a blood test.

That's exactly what an H-Index report is designed to be.

Part 1: the overall score

The report opens with one number between 0 and 100. Mark's is 58.

The score sits in one of four bands: below 40 (several areas need attention), 40–60 (a mixed picture with clear priorities), 60–80 (a solid base with a few gaps) and 80 and above (strong habits to maintain). It isn't a measure of how healthy your heart is, and it doesn't predict events. It describes how well the everyday foundations of recovery, the things between appointments, are currently working.

One feature makes the score different from a simple checklist. In the Healos™ framework, your mind-body-spirit state acts as a multiplier on everything else. Strong habits combined with untreated low mood score lower than you might expect, because in real life low mood drags every other area down too.

Part 2: the 11 categories

Next comes the category picture, which is where most people find the report useful. Each of the 11 categories combines several of the 32 dimensions. Mark's illustrative profile looks like this:

His strongest areas are medical understanding (72) and environment (70): he knows his medications and diagnosis, and his home is set up well. His weakest are sleep (38) and movement (41). Since cardiac rehab ended, his walking has dropped to weekends, and he's waking at 3 a.m. most nights. Nutrition (48) is middling, and mind-body-spirit (54) suggests some ongoing worry that may be feeding the sleep problem.

Seeing the categories side by side is what makes patterns visible. Poor sleep, falling activity and lingering worry are three separate complaints when you mention them one at a time. Together, they tell a clear story that Mark and his cardiologist can do something about.

Part 3: action areas and questions for your specialist

The report then turns the picture into a short list. For Mark, the top three action areas are:

  1. Sleep: a regular wake time, a screen-free wind-down and a question about sleep apnoea, since he snores and wakes unrefreshed.

  2. Movement: a daily 15-minute walk as a non-negotiable minimum, building back toward his rehab level.

  3. Worry and mood: a two-question mood check every two weeks, and telling his care team that fear of another heart attack is keeping him awake.

It also includes questions to bring to the appointment, for example: "Could my snoring be sleep apnoea, and should I be tested?" and "Is it safe for me to increase my walking, and how hard should I push?" Finally, the report lists the medications and supplements Mark entered, so his cardiologist can check them at a glance. Medication consistency matters: two years after an acute coronary syndrome, only about 40% of older adults in Ontario were still taking their statin (Jackevicius et al., JAMA, 2002).

① 睡眠——固定起床时间、睡前无屏幕放松,并询问睡眠呼吸暂停(他打鼾、醒来不解乏);

② 运动——每天 15 分钟散步作为雷打不动的最低量,逐步回到康复期水平;

Free audit or full report: what's the difference?

The free H-Index Audit gives you the overall score and the three most important things to focus on. For many people, that's enough to decide what to do next.

Clarity Starter, the full H-Index report (CA$49), adds the complete 11-category breakdown, your score band, personalised nutrition suggestions matched to your medication list, the questions for your specialist and a recommendation for which Healos™ plan, if any, fits your stage. It arrives as a branded PDF you can print or forward to your care team.

And if the picture is already clear, you can go straight to support. The 91-Day Protocol builds a check-in at days 30, 60 and 91 into its three stages, Clear, Replenish and Repair, so the report becomes a progress tracker rather than a one-time snapshot.

What the H-Index™ is not

It's worth being clear about the limits. The H-Index™ doesn't measure your arteries, your heart function or your risk of another event. It doesn't diagnose depression, sleep apnoea or anything else; it flags areas worth raising with a professional. It doesn't replace blood tests, imaging or specialist judgement. Your answers are used to generate your report and handle support requests, and Healos doesn't sell health information.

Used for what it is, a structured snapshot of the everyday side of recovery, it does one job very well: it makes the part of recovery that happens between appointments visible.

The bottom line

An H-Index™ report turns how you've been living, sleeping, moving and feeling into one score, an 11-category picture, three action areas and a few good questions. It won't tell you what's wrong with your heart. It will help you and your specialist use a short appointment well, and help you decide which kind of support makes sense next.
